The Olympics of Truth

By Wendy S. Scott

At this moment, there are about six billion people in the world.  Billions more have come and gone.  If God wanted to convince every single person that has ever lived on the planet that He existed, then He would have to personally visit every single one of us.  This, however, would eliminate any need for faith.  If we knew without a shadow of a doubt that God existed, we would be obligated to honor Him, there being no reasonable justification to rebel.  This state of obligation taints the relationship of love that God wants to share with us in that there would be no other viable choice.

Since we cannot see God, then we can only know Him by the evidence He gives us.  For thousands of years, hundreds of philosophies, faiths, sects, and religions have been in a heated competition for your soul.  But while you still consider their enticing offers of freedom, or Nirvana, or self-improvement, or self-control, consider all the events of this competition carefully.  Do not sell your allegiance to a defeated competitor, who cannot qualify at the lowest level.  Be wise and discerning with your soul, and you will discover victorious satisfaction, because in the OLYMPICS of Truth, the Bible wins the GOLD in every event!!

Here are today’s events:

Battle of the Books

First Event: History

All the events of the Bible take place in real places, with real people, at real times, all confirmed by archeology.

The Bible was written by over 40 authors, from completely different backgrounds, in several locations, over the period of at least 1,500 years (not just by one guy in one time period) and details more eyewitness history of the world than any other ancient text, religious or secular.

The Bible faithfully records events with rich cultural and historical details of Israel and surrounding civilizations, establishing its credibility and God’s interest in our lives

No detail of the Bible has ever proved inaccurate

Most writings are by actual witnesses, published while living witnesses would have disputed any discrepancies.

Today, we don’t challenge historical events like the Gettysburg Address because they have always been accepted as true from the beginning.  The same tests that we apply to any history we did not witnesses, we can apply to the Bible.  Was it accepted by its generation?  Do other records agree?  Is there physical evidence to confirm any of it?  If the Biblical histories are false, then these customary criteria should quickly fail.

If even scholars recognize the incredible accuracy of the entire Bible, written when very little historical writing was even taking place, then we can have confidence in the events blended in with the histories of God’s deeds, words, and promises. No other text of faith, ancient or not, can compare to it.  The introduction to the Gospel of Luke (who is still a highly regarded historian) affirms this integrity by declaring that witnesses were interviewed, and details of such historical significance were included as to assure the reader of the certainty of the truth of the events and sayings concerning Jesus.  In fact Peter, John and Paul also point to other living witnesses as evidence.  The examples of historical accuracy are so numerous, one would have to quote the whole Bible to list them.  No other faith is based on such trustworthy facts.

The Bible wins the GOLD!!

Second Event: Textual reliability

The Old Testament meets the highest copying standards

Nearly 2,000 year old Dead Sea Scrolls contain all but one O.T. book, and confirm the accuracy of copied manuscripts

At 20,000 ancient manuscripts, the New Testament has more manuscript support than any ancient work

New Testament writings date within 40 years of events, recording Jesus’ ministry and essential doctrine of the Gospel—while witnesses were still alive

Too much evidence to question its accurate translation

The Bible of today is not different from thousands of years ago, while other faiths have made textual changes.

All the books of the Bible agree on the history, the essential nature of God, God’s plan, and more

Though there has been much speculation about the accurate transmission of the Bible’s original texts, it has passed every test.  Only the Bible has had to meet such high copying standards.  Throughout its history, the Hebrew texts (Old Testament) have been faithfully copied by scribes to such strict standards, that each line and column was numbered, and always had to end on the same character to ensure accuracy, confirmed today by comparison with the Dead Sea Scrolls.  The New Testament has 20,000 ancient manuscripts available for comparison from different countries and languages, making changes impossible without disagreeing with all the other ancient copies.  Most ancient works have less than 10 manuscripts available for comparison, the next best being the Iliad with 643.  Remarkably, the New Testament Manuscripts date back to the first century, instead of several hundred years from the original, like other ancient texts.  Also, these accounts were written by actual witnesses within 40 years of events, rare for that time.  The Bible’s textual integrity is unquestioned by scholars, further confirmed by its continuity and doctrinal agreement throughout its books over thousands of years.

No other ancient text, secular or faith based, has so much evidence to establish its reliability and continuity. We can trust the integrity of the Biblical text when we apply to it the same criteria as we do to any other historical document or record of events that we did not witness.  We can trust Jesus’ words like we trust all other history because of what has always been accepted, and what was written by his contemporaries and witnesses. There is without exception, no truer record than the Bible.  No other ancient text has been so scrutinized, and no other ancient text meets the least of these requirements.

The Bible wins the GOLD!!

Third Event: Prophecy

·         No other faith based text offers prophecy for corroboration

·         Biblical prophecy makes up about a fourth of its writings, the majority of which has already come to pass

·         Prophecy in the Bible is specific, and hauntingly accurate

·         Books and prophets of the Old Testament cross reference each other, validating details and the times they were written.  Prophets mentioned: Daniel (Ezekiel), Isaiah (2 Kings, 2 Chronicles), Jeremiah (2 Chron, Ezra, Daniel), Ezra (Nehemiah), Zechariah (Ezra, Nehemiah) Nehemiah (Ezra), Micah (Jeremiah).  If one is false, they are all false.

·         Prophesies about Israel are precise—captured by Babylon, released by king named Cyrus to rebuild temple (Is 44:28), Jerusalem destroyed and Jews scattered among nations (Deut 28:64-67), (Duet 30:3, Is 43:5-6 & more) Jews finally returned to Israel in 1948 after 2,000 year exilean absolute miracle of prophecy, and that Jerusalem will always be a world problem (Zech 12:2-3, 9)

·         Prophecies about future world empires are precise—Daniel chapters 7 and 8 name the specifics of the Mede/ Persian, the Greek (describing the life and death of Alexander the Great), and the rise and dissolution of the Roman.  Dozens of proclamations against specific cities have endured, and the Persian derived cultural and government terms (with no Greek terms), along with historical details accurate to the Babylonian Empire, ensures the authenticity of the time period indicated that Daniel was written in.

·         Over 300 prophecies about the Messiah were fulfilled in Jesus, though written hundreds of years before his birth.

The Bible is the only book to produce authenticated evidence of precise prophesy.  Archeology confirms many of the rich historical details given in the Bible, and has never proven them false.  Such reliable evidence confirms when these prophesies were written, in relation to when they were actually fulfilled.  Ancient secular records that remain also confirm these  details   and   times,  verifying   these   most    astounding predictions.  The fact that the Jews have maintained a biologically and culturally separate people is astonishing, but that God would fulfill His promise to Israel after nearly 2,000 years is miraculous and specific evidence of prophesy fulfilled.

Additionally, Jesus fulfilled every one of over 300 prophecies about the Messiah, too precise to be manipulated:  1) His time of arrival (Dan 9:24-26) 2) before the destruction of the 2nd temple in 70 AD (Mal 3:1); 3) His exact lineage (Zech 12:12-13, Luke 3:26, 29, 31) 4) born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2), 5) betrayed for 30 pieces of silver (Zech 11:12, Matt 26:14,15) 6) betrayed by his people (Zech 12:10, 13:6, Is 53:1-5) 7) beaten (Is 52:14) 8) killed by crucifixion (David’s 22nd Psalm, more than 1,000 years before invented and Zech 10:10, 13: 6) 9) and his clothes gambled for at foot of cross (Psalm 22:18). 10) He was buried in the tomb of a rich man (Is 53:9) 11) and his followers scattered after his death (Zech 13:7) 12) but became fearless after they claimed to see him alive (Ps 22:30-31)—even unto death.  We know that these things are true, and ring true as their testimony endures to this day.  Who would die for what they knew was a lie?  Jesus fulfilled all these prophecies.  Ask yourself, if prophecy is so easy to manipulate, why has no one else managed to do it?  Only a true God can use precise prophecy to confirm His word.

The Bible wins the GOLD!!

Fourth Event: Science

·         The Bible is the only book of faith to offer scientifically sound details and explanations of life.

·         Not one account, from Creation to Noah’s flood, has been refuted by a single scientific fact

·         Every fact of science validates the Biblical claims, but no undisputed fact has ever exclusively confirmed evolution

·         All known and accepted laws of science have to be broken in order to allow for the Big Bang and theory of evolution, while they all confirm Creation and Noah’s flood: 1) 1st and 2nd Laws of Thermodynamics 2) E=MC2 3) Newton’s Laws of motion 4) Law of conservation of momentum, 5) principles of gases 6) principles of gravity, nuclear force, and electromagnetic force 7) Life begets life 8) laws of genetics and heredity 9) limits of mutation 10) principles of hydraulics 11) of weather 12) and erosion.

·         All anomalies in nature which cannot be explained sufficiently by the evolution model, are perfectly explained by the Creation/Flood model: 1) phenomenon of stars and heat in the far galaxies 2) the existence and special movement of planets and satellites 3) perfect physical conditions for life on earth 4) life 5) intelligence and self awareness 6) flight 7) complex and precise biological organs and functions, such as eyes 8) ecological balance 9) waterborne sediments that cover the entire earth several miles thick 10) the existence of fossils 11) stasis in the fossil record 12) greater abundance of life in past and less in present 13) mass extinctions (dinosaurs) 14) enormous water formed geological features 15) fossil fuels 16) the Ice Age 17) and a population growth that indicates humanity is only about 4,000 years old.

·         All claims to support the evolutionary view through dating the earth, insinuating legitimate species transitions and hominoid ancestry, constructing a geological fossil column, implying the existence and continuation of living evolutionary examples, are all highly questioned and unproven even among evolutionary scientists—all have been debunked by true scientific facts.

·         The Bible gives scientific insight far before its time:

1) Light is in motion (Job 38:19,20) 2) The universe had a beginning (Genesis 1) 3) 2nd law of thermodynamics—even the universe will wear out (Psalm 102:25,26) 4) Genetic code defined (Genesis 1:21-31) 5) Atoms (Heb 11:3)  6) Perfect (untestable) plan for Noah’s ark for rough, high seas (Genesis 6:16) 7) Blood is the source of life in a body (Leviticus 17:11.  Bloodletting ended in the 1800’s) 8) The earliest principles of quarantine, sanitation, sterilization and handling the dead (Leviticus 12-15) 9) leaving ground fallow (Lev 25:4) 10) The earth is a sphere (Isaiah 4o:22) 11) The center of the earth is hot (Job 28:5) 12) Hydraulic cycle (Job 26:8, Job 36:27,28, and Ecclesiastes 1:7 )

Though the Bible is ridiculed by evolutionists, it is verified by more scientific facts than even their own “scientific” origin theories.  Other faith based texts do not try to explain the world with scientific details, demonstrating their lack of authority.

The Bible wins the GOLD!!

Battle of the Gods

Fifth Event:  Claims

The God of the Bible is the only God that ever claimed to create the universe, the world, people and everything

He claims to be the one and only God that has ever existed

He claims to be almighty

He claims to be good and just and holy

He claims to be very Love itself

He claims to have an eternal plan for humanity

He claims His word is incorruptible

He claims He does not change

He claims to be merciful

Isaiah 44:24I am the Lord that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone, that spread the abroad the earth by myself.”

Isaiah 44:6, 45: 5,  “I am the first and the last; and beside me there is no God. . . I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside me,

Isaiah 46: 9-10I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done. . .”

Num 23:19  God is not a man that He should lie; nor the son of man, that He should repent: hath He said, and shall not do it?  Or hath He spoken, and shall He not make it good?”

Deut 32:4 “[He] is the rock, His word is perfect: for all His ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is He.”

I John 4:7–8 “. . . for God is love.”

Rom 16:26-27. . .the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, but now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations. . .”

Isaiah 55:11  So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth.  It shall not return to me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper . . .”

Matt 24:35Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my word shall not pass away.”

Isaiah 40:28 “. . .the Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary?  There is no searching His understanding.”

Isaiah 46: 10My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure.”

Malachi 3:6  For I am the Lord, I change not.”

Psalms 100:5  For the Lord is good, His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endureth to all generations.”

There are no legitimate options.  Unless one chooses to incorporate myths of Sun gods and the like, there are only two choices—evolution or Creation.  No other god has claimed to be the creator.  The God of the Bible is the only almighty God that claims to be the perfection of every Godly attribute.  All other faiths concede that their gods fall short in one or more of these qualities.  Any god that is not absolutely supreme in every way, is no God, and cannot satisfy all our needs.

The GOD of the Bible wins the GOLD!!

Sixth Event:  Redemption

The God of the Bible says He loves each of us

I Pet 5:7Casting all your care on Him, for He careth for you.”

2 Pet 3:9The Lord. . .is patient to usward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

But our sins separate us from Him

Isaiah 59:2Your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you. . .”

Romans 3:10, 23There is none righteous, no not one:”  For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.

James 4:17Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.”

I John 1:8If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”

God is Holy and must judge our sin

Ezekiel 18:4The soul that sinneth, it shall die.”

Hebrews 2:7It is appointed a man once to die, and then judgment.

God provided the way of salvation Himself

Is 43:24-25 “. . .thou hast made me to serve with thy sins, thou hast wearied me with thine iniquities.  I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions for my own sake, and will not remember thy sins.”

God sent Jesus to redeem us from our sins

Isaiah 3:6All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned to every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”

Acts 13:27, 28, 30, 38,39They that dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers. . . though they found no cause of death in Him, yet desired they Pilate that He should be slain. . .But God raised Him from the dead . . . He was seen of them who are his witnesses. . .that through this man is preached forgiveness of sins:  And by Him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.”

Romans 5:8God commends His love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ diedfor us.”

John 3:16For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotton Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Colossians 2:13And you, being dead in your sins, . . . hath he quickened together with Him, having forgiven you of all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of the ordinances against us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to His cross.”

Romans 5:19For as by one man’s disobedience [Adam], many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one man [Jesus] shall many be made righteous.”

I Corinthians 15:22For as in Adam all die, even in Christ shall all be made alive.”

Romans 6:23For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Jesus was God Himself coming to redeem us

Is. 45:21-22There is no God beside me; a just God and a savior: there is none beside me.  Look unto me, and be saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God and there is none else.”

II Cor 5:19God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them.”

John 14:1He that hath seen me, hath seen the Father, and how then sayest thou ‘Show us the Father?’”

John 10:30I and my Father are One.”

John 1:1-4, 14In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the word was God. . .All things were made by Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.  In Him was life, and the Life was the Light of men . . .and the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us. . .”

God gives us eternal life only by faith in Jesus

John 14:6I am the way, the truth, and the Life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me.”

John 3:36He that beleiveth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that beleiveth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on Him.”

Acts 2:38 “. . .Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”

II Corinthians 5:21For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we may be made the righteousness of God in Him.”

Romans 8:12There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit.  For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ hath made us free from the law of sin and death.”

God requires only our faith for salvation

Ephesians 2:8,9For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:  Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

Romans 10:10,13For with the heart man beleiveth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. . .for whosoever calleth upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Romans 3:22, 24--28The righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon them all that believe. . . Being justified

freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: . . .through faith in His blood, to declare His righteousness for the remission of sins, . . . that He might be the justifier of him which beleiveth in Jesus.  Where is the boasting then?  It is excluded.  By what law?  Of works?  Nay: but by the law of faith.  Therefore we

conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.”

God holds us responsible for the truth

Psalms 14:1The fool hath said in his heart, ‘There is no God.’  They are corrupt,”

Ps 19:1-3The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth His handiwork.  Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night showeth knowledge.  There is no speech or language, where their voice is not heard.”

Rom 1:18-23For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath showed it unto them.  For the invisible things from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: because that, when they knew God, they glorified Him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.  Professing themselves wise, they became fools, and changed the uncorruptable God into an image like corruptible man. ”

I Cor 1:18The message of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but to us which are saved it is the power of God.”

Gal 1:6-9I marvel that ye are so soon removed from Him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that . . . would pervert the gospel of Christ.  But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.”

II Cor 11:3But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled eve through his subtlety, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.  For if he that commeth preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached. . .ye might well bear with him.”

Matt 7:22, 23Many will say to me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? . . . and in thy name done many wonderful works?’ Then I will profess unto them, ‘I never knew you: depart from me ye that work iniquity.”

Rev 20:12,15& 21:8 I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book, which is the Book of Life; and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books according to their works. . . and whosoever wasnot found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire. . . But the fearful, and unbelieving. . . shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Rev 21:27There shall in no wise enter in any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.”

But God offers all of us His mercy

Is 2913-14Ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search with all your heart.  And I will be found by you. . .”

Psalm 103:8  The Lord is merciful, and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.”

Rom 2:4 “. . .the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering. . . the riches of God leadeth thee to repentance.”

Only the true God of the Bible offers us salvation through repentance and faith alone.  He does not leave the work to his children, but He came Himself in the form of a man to show us His love and fulfill the law on our behalf.  Then He suffered physical death so He could rise from the dead to demonstrate His power over death.  No other God has offered to save us Himself, and no one else has risen from the dead to give us life.

THE GOD of the Bible wins the GOLD

Seventh Event:  Promises

God guarantees us:

Eternal life if we believe in His Son

Romans 10:9If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in thine heart that God raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

I John 5 :13  “These things have I written to you that believe in the

Son of God; that you may know you have eternal life

Forgiveness of all our sins and a fresh start

I John 1:9If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

John 3:3Jesus said ‘Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of heaven.”

Romans 8:2  For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.”

That He will always take care of us if we trust Him

Romans 8:28  And we know that all things worketh together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.”

Heb 13:5He hath said, ‘I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.’”

Isaiah 41:13  For I the Lord will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, ‘Fear not; I will help thee.’”

Isaiah 58:9  Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and He shall say ‘Here am I.’”

Matthew 6:33  Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you.”

Peace and joy when we trust Him

Romans 15:13Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in power of the Holy Ghost.”

2 Cor 3:17  Now the Lord is that Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”

Personal growth and wisdom in Him

2 CorWe all, with an open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.”

Phil 2:13  For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do His good pleasure.”

Hebrews 10:16This is the covenant I will make with them saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them.”

Eph 1:17-18  That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him:  The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of His calling, and what the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints.

The sure love of God’s promises has been established through the true Gospel of Jesus Christ our God and Savior. Jesus confirmed God’s plan of salvation in His own words, which have been faithfully delivered to us.  He continually preached forgiveness of sins and redemption through His death and resurrection.  He taught of hell and judgment if we reject His atoning work.  He confirmed the whole Bible in His ministry, and brought to life in Himself the Old Testament depictions of Passover and sacrificing of lambs to atone for sin.

All other faiths lay salvation in our own hands, making us as gods, but we cannot be gods.  The offer to be a god is only made one time in the Bible—not by God, but by the devil who lied when he beguiled Eve in the Garden in Genesis 3:5 “. . . then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods. . .”  We are not righteous, only God is righteous, and He holds us responsible for the things we intuitively know are true.  Sin is our problem, but God has not left us helpless—He gave us Jesus Christ as our solution.  God is drawing you to Himself with His loving kindness.  He wants to give you the fountain of peace in His eternal life, if you thirst for it.  Ask the Lord Jesus to wash you of your sins, and come dwell in your heart, and you will be saved.  He will do it in you, for His own joy and glory.

The Bible’s historical details are unquestionable, the prophecy fulfillment is astounding, and the scientific validity confirms its reliability.  If all these things are so secure, then the promises of the Bible are true and trustworthy.  All other books of faith contradict the Bible, but none of them have these sure foundations to justify their major doctrinal conflicts.  No faith based text stands up to the scrutiny that the Bible withstands, and therefore have no entitlement to authority.

IN THE OLYMPICS OF TRUTH THE BIBLE WINS THE GOLD!!
